This Year’s Theme: Juneteenth — KEJETIA TO GREELEY BAZAAR
Inspired by Kejetia Market the largest open-air market in Kumasi, Ghana this year’s Juneteenth celebration invites you to experience the “Kejetia to Greeley Bazaar”: a vibrant space where culture, community, creativity, and commerce meet.
We’re bringing the energy of Kejetia right here to Greeley through local Black vendors, family-friendly crafts, live music, and delicious southern-style food.
This Event is Free and Open to the Public
Everyone is invited students, families, faculty, staff, and the broader community. No RSVP is needed. Just show up and enjoy the day.
Why We Celebrate Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a national holiday that marks the day when the last enslaved African Americans in the United States learned they were free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, the news didn’t reach enslaved people in Texas until June 19, 1865. That’s why we celebrate June 19 also called Freedom Day or Juneteenth.
This holiday became official across the U.S. in 2021, thanks in part to the work of activist and retired teacher Opal Lee, who fought for years to make Juneteenth a recognized holiday.
About Juneteenth at the Garvey
Importance to the Marcus Garvey Cultural Center
The MGCC has been proud to present an annual Juneteenth celebration for the UNC community and the City of Greeley, and for 2025, we are proud to present this year’s Juneteenth theme: Kejetia to Greeley Bazaar, taking place on June 19th, 2025 at 12pm at the UNC Campus Commons! In honor of the largest open-air market in Ghana, located in the city of Kumasi, we are bringing local businesses to sell products and services to event attendees. We are also hoping to host a Family Craft Room, where attendees of all ages can enjoy the event! Additionally, enjoy the musical stylings of Tony Exum Jr. at our free jazz concert taking place inside the Campus Commons Performance Hall at 1pm!
